Bupa Challenge, alliances that bear fruit

This planting was possible thanks to the participation of Bupa employees in Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Panama and Miami in the first edition of Bupa Global Latin America.

The challenge consisted of walking 6,000 steps a day for a month. For each employee who achieved the challenge, Bupa is planting trees and will expand its Footprints of Change program, which promotes care for nature.

Saturday, March 2, 2024, was the date chosen to plant 1,200 native trees and shrubs as a result of this challenge.

With the Cotopaxi volcano watching over the crops

The planting site chosen was Hacienda Los Mortiños, near the northern entrance to Cotopaxi National Park.

The Foundation and Hacienda Los Mortiños signed a Cooperation Agreement, through which they committed to work on the restoration of habitat in an area of 23 hectares that had been deforested by grazing animals.

It was the first planting in this place, we seek to protect a threatened wetland, since, with the loss of vegetation around it, there is a greater risk of drying up, and thus we lose a privileged space for biodiversity, wetlands are also crucial for the preservation of water sources.

There were 50 students from the National Polytechnic who said: YES WE CAN! is the expression that comes to mind, since, in the middle of the day, it started to rain, rain, rain..., and the rain did not stop, however, even though the temperature dropped and the activity became more difficult, they continued working until the task was completed.

The selected species are all native and appropriate for this area, mainly jactas, páramo straw, piquil, yagual incana, yagual paute, chilca de páramo, romerillo and others.

We thank all those who made this journey possible, this effort contributes to the preservation of biodiversity, and we contribute our grain of sand to combat climate change.
