The loss of tropical forests means not only the disappearance of a natural resource, but also the loss of a crucial ally in the fight against climate change. Forests act as carbon sinks, helping to mitigate the concentration of CO₂ in the atmosphere. In addition, deforestation affects the lives of indigenous and local communities, which depend directly on forest resources for their livelihoods.
Towards a Sustainable Future
The situation calls for a multifaceted approach that includes the effective implementation of the Organic Environmental Code and the expansion of initiatives such as the Reforestemos Ecuador program, which seeks to conserve forests and moorlands through reforestation projects in partnership with private enterprise. These policies and programs need to be reinforced and accompanied by additional efforts in research, education, and community participation to promote reforestation and forest conservation in Ecuador.
