With the energy of youth and the majestic Cotopaxi as a backdrop, Hacienda Los Mortiños, located at the northern entrance of Cotopaxi National Park, became the stage for a remarkable transformation.
Nearly 200 people, including students and teachers from La Inmaculada School, gathered for an ambitious reforestation day sponsored by BUPA, with the goal of planting 1,000 native trees, shrubs, and plants.
Although the event started a bit late, around 10:30 a.m., the enthusiasm was undeniable. High school students from first, second, and third years quickly organized into six groups of 30, each identified by a different color.
Armed with tools, they got to work digging holes and planting species like achupalla, aliso, and polylepis—key to the Andean ecosystem.
For many of these young participants, this was their first real encounter with the natural beauty of Cotopaxi. Some had never held a shovel or a digging bar before, and the simple act of getting their hands dirty with soil was a revelation.
Their faces showed a mix of surprise, initial discomfort, and, ultimately, a deep sense of satisfaction as they connected with Pachamama.
The teachers didn’t hold back either. Working side by side with their students, they led by example, inspiring everyone with their dedication.
The presence of the Mother Superior was especially motivating, becoming a central figure who encouraged the students to give their all to the task at hand.
The day unfolded in an atmosphere of camaraderie and learning. For these young people, many of whom are used to their comfort zones, this experience was a powerful reminder that giving back to the Earth is not only necessary but also deeply fulfilling.
By the time the event wrapped up around 1:00 p.m., the participants shared a well-deserved snack before heading out on a tour of Cotopaxi National Park, including a visit to the stunning Limpiopungo Lagoon.
With tired hands but renewed spirits, every volunteer left with the satisfaction of having contributed to the conservation of our planet.
A heartfelt thank you to each and every volunteer who joined this effort.
