A frequent criticism of volunteer planting work

We have heard it said on some occasions that “the trees are planted, but then no one else cares, and they dry up”.

This is a valid criticism, planting is a big effort that involves many actors:

  • The nursery that sells the native plants,
  • The organization that provides the financing,
  • We as the Foundation are committed to the logistics, the technical advice and then we monitor and replace the trees that dry out,
  • The owner of a deforested area who decides to use it for habitat restoration for the conservation of nature and, very important, the volunteers who contribute with their time and effort,
  • The volunteers who provide the labor for planting.

It is frustrating, for all involved, that after this shared effort, after some time, they return to the site and the trees are dry.

As a Foundation, we monitor both the trees we plant and the sites, ensuring that they remain as areas for the conservation of nature, however, now we are taking a new step of great importance.

Identifiers

This Sunday, May 25, 2025 is a historic day for the Foundation, it is the first planting in which we place identifiers for a representative sample, this time 78 of the 500 trees planted, 15%, will have a QR code installed on the tutor that accompanies the tree, when accessing this code will display the most relevant information of that tree, for monitoring and maintenance.

This code indicates the date of planting, the nursery, the conditions of the plant, if it was reproduced by seed, cuttings and many other relevant information, which will allow us to incorporate additional information on the development of the tree, we will know which species are more successful, which ones dry out, how much they grow.

It will allow the volunteer to know exactly which is “his” or “her” planted tree or trees, so that when he or she returns to the site, at any time in the future, he or she will have the information to identify the tree or trees he or she planted and know how they have evolved.

What we planted

Los árboles y arbustos incluido en esta siembra fueron: guabillas, tilos, guabas, macanas (palmas), porotones, cedros y chotos.

For the first time we will be able to make a detailed follow-up of the selected trees of each species to know how they are evolving.

There is much to be thankful for

We thank Anibal Cueva for allowing us to plant on his farm, with the commitment that the area will be maintained in perpetuity as a nature conservation area.

To Sandra Morocho and Timo Kornfeld, members of the Group of Birdwatchers of the Quijos River Valley, they were given the task of putting the energy for the implementation of the project of the identifiers, for this they have had the unconditional support of the Foundation reflected in the support of Benjamin Guevara and Camilo Rada to whom we also thank.

To the Foundation's collaborators who traveled to Borja to be part of this experience.

To the volunteers who participated in this planting, planting these 500 trees was not an easy task, to all of them a big THANK YOU!
